Rustic Luck
Horseshoes have been considered good luck since Greek times. Besides valuing horses, they believed iron was a gift from the gods as it came from meteorites. In fact, blacksmiths were highly honored because of this view. Several years ago a friend showed me a grocery bag full of horseshoes she'd gotten at a yard sale. How I lusted for those horseshoes. What a fantastic and fun theme to work with I thought! (She gave them to me a short while later as a birthday gift.) Since then, I have found many more, along with other rustic elements. Many things come from Wilbur Hot Springs Nature Preserve in Northern California where I lived as a staff artist for three years. I still visit the 1800 acres with my trusty collecting pouch and leather gloves. An antique dealer from the area saves odd treasures for me that no one else would want, like rusted out pans. Transforming these types of things into inspiring art is one of my specialties! (2008 -2009) |
